Dr. Ramakrishnan Ayloor Seshadri

Senior Surgical Oncologist

Dr.Ramakrishnan Ayloor Seshadri is a senior surgical oncologist with more than 23 years of experience in oncology related clinical care, training and research, with a special interest in gastrointestinal cancers and peritoneal malignancies. After completing his super-speciality degree in surgical oncology from the prestigious Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, he continued to work there as a faculty member for almost 20 years during which time he established and headed the Gastrointestinal and Hepaticopancreaticobiliary oncology services and multidisciplinary tumor board, framing evidence-based protocols to improved patient outcomes.

He has performed thousands of surgeries, pioneering several techniques in India, including sphincter preserving surgeries for rectal cancer, Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal malignancies, Laparoscopic and robotic surgeries for rectal and gastric cancers and Watch and Wait strategy for managing rectal cancers. His leadership transformed the GI&HPB division into one of the most respected oncology units in India.

He has also served in various roles at the institute including Dean Academics, In-Charge of Clinical research Unit, Lead Clinical Quality Improvement and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee. Dr. Ramakrishnan has received research, training and travel grants from Academy of Medical Sciences, UK and DBT-Wellcome India Alliance, India-Oxford cancer research network, Appendix cancer PMP foundation, Department of Science and Technology and Science and Engineering Research Board, Govt. of India.

He has more than 100 impactful publications in national and international journals and contributed to 3 book chapters which have more than 1300 citations. He is a member of the editorial board of the British Journal of Surgery and Annals of Surgical Oncology and of various national and international professional organisations. He is a faculty of the National Cancer Grid CREDO workshop for research protocol development and EQUIP India quality improvement programs, national GI cancer guideline development group and core member of the Technical Committee for Centers of Excellence-Oncology of the Quality Council of India.

Dr. Ramakrishnan believes in patient-centric care and strives for accessible, equitable, affordable and quality cancer care for the population.
