HPV VACCINATION:
HPV Vaccine:
- HPV vaccination is an important way to protect against HPV infection that commonly causes cancer in cervix.
- HPV vaccination offers protection against high risk serotypes HPV 16 / HPV 18
- Women who has been vaccinated still need to be followed up regularly with screening.
Types of HPV Vaccine:
Two vaccines licensed globally are available in India
- Quadrivalent vaccine (GARDASIL) : It covers HPV serotypes 16, 18, 6 and 11, it protects against both cervical cancer and genital warts
- Bivalent Vaccine (Cervarix): It covers HPV serotypes 16 and 18. It confers protection only against cervical cancer.
DOSAGE AND SCHEDULE:
- Dose 0.5 ml given intramuscularly.
- Recommended age for initiation of vaccination is 9-12 years. Women up to 26 years can be vaccinated if not done prior.
- GARDASIL: Total of three doses at 0, 2, and 6 months are recommended
- CERVARIX: Total of three doses at 0, 1, and 6 months
